(Guelph, ON) – Five European players were drafted at the 2018 CHL Import Draft held earlier today. Four were selected in the first round.
Mads Sogaard (Alborg, Denmark), a 6-6, 187 lbs. goaltender was selected in the 1st round (32nd overall) by the WHL Medicine Hat Tigers. Sogaard played this past season with the NAHL Austin Bruins seeing action in 22 regular season games and sporting a 2.64 GAA and .906 save percentage.
Defenseman Oliver Turan (Innsbruck, Austria) was selected in the 1st round (40th overall) by the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the QMJHL. The 6-5, 198 lbs. blueliner skated this past season with the NAHL Brookings Blizzard and place for the Slovakian U20 team at the recent World Junior Championships. Turan played at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Tournament and played in the U18 WHC as an underage this past spring for Slovakia
Forward Manuel Alberg (Cologne, Germany) was also taken in the 1st round (45th overall) by the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL. A skilled 5-10, 184 lbs. right winger, Alborg played for the Kolner EC U19 team scoring 32 points in 25 games in 2017-18. Alborg played in the recent U18 WHC as an underage for his native German team.
Forward Peter Melcher (Svitavy, Slovakia) was selected with the 57th overall pick by the Everett Silvertips of the WHL. Melcher split the 2017-18 season between the Iowa Wild U18 AAA club and MHC Martin U19 club in Slovakia. He also played as an underage for his native Slovakia at the recent U18 WHC.
Taro Jentzsch (Berlin, Germany) is a 6-1, 186 lbs. forward with high skill level who was selected by the Sherbooke Phoenix following a successful season with RB Hockey Akademie in the Czech Republic. Jentzsch recorded 54 points in 40 games as well as playing at the U18 WHC for Germany.
